What Are Wisdom Teeth

And Why Do We Have Them?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, were essential for our ancestors to chew tough foods. Today, they are often unnecessary and can lead to overcrowding or impaction due to smaller jaw sizes.

Do We Need to Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Not all wisdom teeth need removal, but extraction is often necessary if:

  • You feel persistent pain or pressure.

  • There’s an infection or gum disease.

  • Your other teeth are crowded or misaligned.

  • Cysts or jaw damage are present.

  • You have difficulty opening your mouth.

Consulting a professional is the best way to determine whether removal is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does recovery take?

Recovery typically takes 3-5 days for simple extractions and up to two weeks for surgical procedures. Following aftercare instructions helps speed up the healing process.

Is the procedure painful?

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation, ensuring a pain-free experience. Most patients report feeling minimal to no discomfort during the procedure, as the sedation effectively numbs the area and relaxes the patient. After the surgery, mild soreness or swelling may occur, but this is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses.

What are the risks of not removing wisdom teeth?

If left untreated, problematic wisdom teeth can lead to infections, tooth decay, gum disease, cysts, or even damage to neighboring teeth. Regular monitoring can help determine the right course of action.

How do I prepare for wisdom tooth removal?

Before your procedure, follow your dentist's or surgeon’s instructions, which may include avoiding food or drinks for a few hours, arranging transportation, and ensuring a comfortable recovery space at home.

Dr. Eggleston has done several procedures including extractions and implants. He is quick, professional, and very kind. A couple of months ago, I called the emergency number and he called me back from the kids soccer game on the weekend and treated me on Monday morning.

As a medical professional myself, the fact that Sheila has been there since the beginning, speaks to him as an employer and as a dentist.

My 16 year old son had all 4 of his wisdom teeth removed yesterday. Everything went well. We have been following all the instructions we were given by the office and icing off and on. My son is doing great today….minimal swelling only some minor soreness. He will have his follow up next week. We highly recommend Dr Eggleston and his staff.😁

My tooth extraction was quick and Dr. Eggleston was great. The only small issue, is that they do have an inexperienced assistant that was poking a little too much, especially the uvula where there was nothing going on during the extraction. Is not a big deal though. It was a painless and quick procedure and I am grateful for that.
